Khayal Gayaki
Khayal Gayaki is a modern and popular form of vocal music in Hindustani classical music, which evolved from the more austere Dhrupad style.
The word "khayal" comes from the Persian word for "imagination" or "thought," reflecting the style's focus on creative and emotional improvisation.
Features of Khayal Gayaki
Lyrical and Improvisational: Khayal performances are built on a short text, or bandish, which serves as a lyrical theme. The artist then elaborates on the raga's form and mood through extensive improvisation.
Balance of Rasa and Laya: Khayal puts great emphasis on the emotional content (rasa) of the raga, while also showcasing rhythmic complexity (laya).
Accompaniment: The tabla and tanpura are the standard accompaniments for a khayal performance, with the tabla providing the rhythmic framework.
Types of Khayal
Khayal is generally performed in two distinct types based on the tempo:
Bada Khayal (बड़ा ख़याल) - The Grand Khayal:
Tempo: Bada Khayal is sung in a slow tempo (vilambit laya).
Purpose: The slow tempo allows the musician to perform a detailed and deliberate exploration of the raga's notes, melodic phrases, and emotional depth.
Structure: It begins with a slow, contemplative Alap and then moves into the bandish set to a slow taal like Ek Taal or Jhumra.
Improvisation: It features various improvisational techniques such as vilambit tanas (slow, graceful melodic patterns) and sargam (singing with note names).
Chota Khayal (छोटा ख़याल) - The Small Khayal:
Tempo: Chota Khayal is sung in a fast or medium-fast tempo (madhya or drut laya).
Purpose: This is the fast-paced, climactic section of the performance, where the artist demonstrates technical brilliance and rhythmic virtuosity.
Structure: It typically follows the Bada Khayal and is set to a faster taal like Teen Taal or Ek Taal.
Improvisation: It is characterized by fast and complex taans (rapid melodic runs) and rhythmic patterns, bringing the performance to a thrilling conclusion.
A complete Khayal performance often starts with the slow Bada Khayal and transitions into the fast Chota Khayal, giving a comprehensive and dynamic presentation of the raga.
This dual structure is a hallmark of the Khayal style.
