Ek Taal
Ek Taal, meaning "one clap," is a 12-beat rhythmic cycle, or taal, in Hindustani classical music.
It is a complex and graceful taal known for its unique and asymmetrical division, making it a favorite for slow-tempo vocal performances.
Matra, Vibhaag, Taali, and Khaali
Matra (मात्रा)
A matra is a beat.
Ek Taal has 12 matras.
Vibhaag (विभाग):
A vibhaag is a division.
Ek Taal is divided into six vibhaags of 2 beats each (2+2+2+2+2+2).
This structure gives it a different feel compared to the symmetrical Teen Taal.
Taali (ताली):
A taali is a clap. Ek Taal has four taalis on the 1st, 5th, 9th, and 11th matras.
Khaali (खाली):
A khaali is an empty beat. In Ek Taal, there are two khaalis on the 3rd and 7th matras, marked by a wave of the hand.
The rhythmic cycle is often represented by the following theka (the set of rhythmic syllables played on a tabla):
Dhin Dhin (Taali - Clap on 1)
Dhage Tirkit (Khaali - Wave on 3)
Tu Na (Taali - Clap on 5)
Kat Taa (Khaali - Wave on 7)
Dhage Tirkit (Taali - Clap on 9)
Dhin Na (Taali - Clap on 11)
Example of Ek Gun and Dugun
Ek Gun (एक गुण): This is the single, basic tempo where one rhythmic syllable is played per beat.
Theka: Dhin-Dhin, Dhage-Tirkit, Tu - Na, Kat - Taa, Dha-ge-Tir-kit, Dhin - Na
Dugun (दुगुन):
Theka: DhinDhin-DhaageTirkit-TuNa-KatTaa-DhaageTirkit-DhinNa
This is the double tempo where two rhythmic syllables are played per beat. The cycle's duration remains 12 beats, but 24 syllables are played within it.
